Woodforest Bank Night at the Races Puts On A Show

By Mark Baute

Hudson, North Carolina (August 15, 2008) -  Week 17 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Tri-County Motor Speedway continued Friday night with lots of action.  Twin 35ís in Late Model, 35 Lap Pepsi Limited Late Models, 30 Lap Baton Tire Street Stocks, 20 Lap Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks, 35 Lap Legend National Qualifier, 25 Lap Thunder Roadster and a 15 Lap Walt Arney Superette and Deli Road Rage events scheduled.  Jesse LeFevers showed how quick his car was early taking the pole for both 35 Lap Late Model features for the second week in a row. Josh Wright claimed the Pepsi Limited Late Model pole, Adam Welch claimed the Thunder Roadster pole.

Woodforest Bank Night started with heavy action in a great Pepsi Limited Late Model race.  Josh Wright rolled a 5 in the pre-race dice roll sending the 38 of Dexter Canipe Jr. to the inside pole.  Canipe made his way around the track smoothly holding on to the lead from the first green to the checkers. Josh Wright made his move early in the race and followed Canipe the whole race.  Lap 11 had Cory Joyce and Bryant Wallace tangled together ending the night for both cars. Lap 14 had the 37 of Chris Phipps spinning sideways and on Lap 23 Dana Lunsford showed a caution. Finishing order was Canipe, Wright, Bill Cassavaugh, Scott Franklin and Mike Eplee.

The first Late Model feature was next and Andy Loden, starting on outside pole, took the lead on the first lap from the quick car of Jesse LeFevers.  Loden and LeFevers battled strong for first place nearly the whole race as LeFevers tried to find his way on the low-side multiple times.  Lap 15 showed the first caution as Don Paige spun around and hit the tire at entry to pit road.  After the restart, Lee Tissot, RA Brown and Grant Wimbish battled for the 3rd, 4th and 5th place spots for the remainder of the race until David Latour Jr. made his way back to the front. Loden, LeFevers, Tissot, Latour and Brown rounded out the top five.

The Thunder Roadsters of INEX made the next appearance for the night. Adam Welch won the last time at Tri-County and defended his title this week as he led every lap of the race.

The local boys made their way out for the next night as the Baton Tire Street Stocks got ready to put on a show.  Mike Hatton drew the inside pole and showed that he had a car to win with.  Rain came down a third of the way through the race and the cars came in down pit road for about 10 minutes. Clean up crew went to work and had the track dry within a half hour and the races continued.  Mike Hatton continued his run up top until lap 17 when Terrence Tucker and Hatton got together on the front stretch taking Hattonís car out of the race. On the restart, Tucker jumped early from the rear of the field and was black flagged. A couple of laps later lost control of his car coming out of turn two bringing out a caution.  Tucker then made his way back through the field. Chris Townsend came away with the win, Waylon Flynn in second, Kevin Eby third, Tucker in fourth and Josh Burchette in fifth.

The legend race was filled with 18 cars and had some nice clean racing until late in the race when the wrecks started piling up.  The 21 car passed by the 8 to take the win on the final lap.

The Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks put on a show.  On lap 4, rubbing between Carroll McKinney and David Hasson led to larger damage on lap five when Hasson went into the driversí side of McKinney taking both cars out in turn 2.  Both cars were ruined. On lap 11 and lap 12, the car operated by Brad Hasson spun out by himself.  Brad Ballard, Scott Bumgarner raced nose to nose on the final lap and crossed as Ballard, Bumgarner, Jimmy Whisnant, B. Ballard and McKinney.

The second Late Model feature was a show put on by Jesse LeFevers as he pulled away for his fourth win in five starts. Lee Tissot and David Latour battled for third and fourth over the first 20 laps.  LeFevers, Loden, Tissot, Latour and RA Brown rounded out the top five.

Powder Puff Walt Arney Superette & Deli Road Rage put on a show Susan Hollifield won the event.
