LeFevers Takes Two Trips To Victory Lane

By Mark Baute

Hudson, North Carolina (August 8, 2008) - Week 16 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Tri-County Motor Speedway continued Friday night with lots of action.  Twin 35ís in Late Model, 35 Lap Pepsi Limited Late Models, 30 Lap Baton Tire Street Stocks, 20 Lap Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks, 20 Lap Carolina Vintage and a 15 Lap Walt Arney Superette and Deli Road Rage race.  Jesse LeFevers showed how quick his car was early taking the pole for both 35 Lap Late Model Features. Kevin Townsend claimed the Pepsi Limited Late Model pole, Chris Townsend claimed the Baton Tire Street Stock pole and Jackie Stone claimed the Hobby Stock pole awards..

EZ Way Auto Sales Night at the Races started with the first leg of Late Model features with Chase Austin getting the better jump to take over first place for 10 laps until Jesse LeFevers took over first.  RA Brown and Lee Tissot wasted little time as they got around Austin in the next couple of laps to battle hard for second place.  Tissot ended up slamming hard into the wall on lap 24 catching Kurt Crosbie, Andrew Carlsen and Chase Austin in the mix.  All four cars went to their pits and began working on them for the next race.  On the final lap coming out of turn four, Brandon Dean got up into the EZ Way Auto Sales car of Grant Wimbish spinning Wimbish out. Top five included LeFevers, Andy Loden, Brown, Monty Cox and JR Allen.

The Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks put on another great show as David Hasson and Micky Canipe battled up front for several laps.  Jimmy Whisnant and Micky Canipe got into each other on the back stretch taking Whisnant out of the race.  Finishing order was Hasson, Canipe, Jackie Stone, Scott Bumgarner and Carroll McKinney. Canipe refused technical inspection and went to the rear of the field giving Whisnant fifth.

In the Baton Tire Street Stock race, Chris Townsend showed why he is the points leader at Tri-County, starting on the outside pole after the dice roll, took the lead and never looked back. Caution on Lap 8 for debris that came off the car operated by Waylon Flynn bunched the cars up but didnít help the other drivers make any runs on the restart. Marshall Sutton had to go into the pits as he lost power on lap 14.  On Lap 19 Terrence Tucker got a flat tire and had to go into the pits under green.  Townsend took the checkers followed by Jonathon Smith, Kevin Eby, Jeff Sparks and Mike Hatton.

During the short break for intermission where children came to the front stretch to enjoy some ice cream provided by the Tri-County Womenís Club the Carolina Vintage cars got ready for their show.  Lap 13 of the Vintage race caution was thrown as the 3 car got turned around on the back stretch.  Finishing order was 9, 28, 550, 3.

The Pepsi Limited Late Models put on a show as Chris Phipps got loose and had a one car caution. On the restart, Kevin Townsend jumped out to the lead and was followed closely and challenged by Jason Crouse for about 20 laps until Mario Hernandez made his way into third position after having to change a clutch between qualifying and race time.  Crouse fell back and Hernandez made his move to get around Crouse taking second and made his charge to catch Townsend. Lap traffic on lap 32 kept Hernandez from catching Townsend as Townsend took the checkers, Hernandez, Crouse, Dana Lunsford and Bill Cassavaugh rounded out the top five.

The second round of Late Model races showed only 10 cars due to the inability to get cars repaired from the first race.  LeFevers showed his dominance in this race as he jumped to a large lead. Tissot got his car repaired and battled with Loden throughout the whole 35 laps. Brown and Wimbish played follow the leader until the remaining five laps until Wimbish made the move and put his car in fourth.  Finishing order: LeFevers, Tissot, Loden, Wimbish and Brown.
