Excitement All Around With Twin 35's

By Mark Baute

Hudson, North Carolina (August 1, 2008) - Week 15 of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Tri-County Motor Speedway continued Friday night with lots of action.  Twin 35ís in Late Model, 35 Lap Pepsi Limited Late Models, 30 Lap Baton Tire Street Stocks, 20 Lap Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks and a 40 Lap Allison Legacy Series race.  Two Late Model drivers shared the pole, Lee Tissot claimed the first pole and Kevin Leicht claimed the second pole for the Twin 35ís. Kyle Manch claimed the Pepsi Limited Late Model pole and Chris Townsend claimed the Baton Tire Street Stock pole awards, both divisions were inverted six on account of time. The Allison Legacy Series had Austin Hogue sitting on the pole.

The first 35 Lap Late Model feature had some rough action early as Nick Waycaster had to end his night on the fifth lap of the race.  Hard racing from start to finish as Lee Tissot, Jesse LeFevers and Kevin Leicht raced side by side through the turns and getting close to coming three wide out of the turns and into the straight-aways. Sam Watts, Andy Loden, Coleman Pressley and Grant Wimbish all battled hard in the middle of the pack as they came around many corners side by side and got together several times but never enough to gain a strong advantage over another car.  Finishing top five were LeFevers, Leicht, RA Brown, Tissot and Watts.

In the Pepsi Limited Late Model feature, David Currier Jr. claimed the inside pole and got an early jump on the competition to lead the first lap until his car began to get loose out of the turns and Bill Cassavaugh was able to take advantage and begin to pull away from the field.  On lap 10, Kevin Townsend, Mario Hernandez, Currier, Jason Crouse, Eric Evans, Waylon Flynn and Jordan McGregor all got tangled together taking all but Crouse and McGregor out of the race completely. Cassavaugh, Mansch, Scott Franklin, Crouse and Mike Eplee rounded out the top five.

The Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks took the show on next, Mickey Canipe wasted little time getting himself to the front on the second lap with David Hasson and Jimmy Whisnant following on consecutive laps.  Canipe, Hasson, Whisnant, Scott Bumgarner and Carroll McKinney rounded out the top five.

The Kids came down to the front stretch on the ten minute intermission and picked up some candy courtesy of the Tri-County Womenís Club.

The Baton Tire Street Stocks put on a show before the races began as the cars of Kody Townsend and Chris Townsend got together as soon as the green flag came out causing some damage to the car of Chris Townsend. As soon as a restart could be made possible, Jeff Sparks and Jonathon Smith battled up front 12 laps until Smith got out in front and was able to lead the next caution on lap 20 when Mike Hattonís car went up in smoke and Chris Townsend lost his exhaust system on the front stretch.  On the final restart of the division, Smith got a good jump and led to the checkers followed by Terrence Tucker, Sparks, Marshall Sutton and C. Townsend.

The Allison Legacy Series raced next with Austin Hogue taking the win.

The final show of the night was the second leg of the Twin 35ís. Kevin Leicht was supposed to start on the pole but with some engine problems, could not get the car going and had to sit and watch the last race. Lee Tissot and Coleman Pressley wasted little time getting past rookie Grant Wimbish and battled up front as Tissot would pull away down the straight-aways and Pressley would drive down and inside on every turn. Tissot, Pressley, Brown, Watts and LeFevers finished one thru five.

Next week will be having EZ Way Auto Sales Night at the Races. We will have the Whelen Late Models, Pepsi Limited Late Models, Baton Tire Street Stocks, Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks, Carolina Vintage and the Walt Arney Superette and Deli Road Rage. It will be FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT. ALL TICKETS WILL BE $2!!! Gates open at 6pm, Qualifying at 7pm and Features beginning at 8pm. The Kids will be having an ice cream eating contest.
