Leicht Takes the Checkers Again

By Mark Baute

Hudson, North Carolina (July 18, 2008) - Christmas in July at the races on Friday started with a bang and ended with a bang.  The pole winners for the night were Jesse LeFevers in Late Model, Scott Franklin in the Pepsi Limited Late Models and Jeff Sparks in the Baton Tire Street Stocks.

The Late Models showed only eight cars but managed to put on a great show.  Nick Waycaster and Kevin Leicht started on the front row after the dice roll showed a six car invert.  It did not take long for Leicht and Andy “Highside” Loden to jump to the front and battle each other for 30 laps until Loden got a flat right rear tire and started to float to the back of the field.  Loden pulled off on lap 38 and stayed in the pits.  Jason Cochran pulled off to the pits one lap later with handling issues.  Leicht held off a hard charging Jesse LeFevers and RA Brown to seal the deal with only 7 of 8 cylinders pumping for the whole race. Leicht, LeFevers, Brown, Monty Cox and Lee Tissot rounded out the top five.

The Baton Tire Street Stocks lit up the show next.  Lap 6 had Gary Deitz and Waylon Flynn hitting each other throwing the rear axle off of Flynn’s car down the track and Deitz’ steering column came down in his lap.  Chris Townsend and Terrence Tucker battled strong for the lead over the ensuing 25 laps, all the way to the checkers.  Townsend held on to the lead until lap 23 when Tucker got around the outside and contact occurred ripping the hood on Townsends’ car.  Tucker, Townsend, Marshall Sutton, Sparks and Greg Grindstaff rounded out the top five.

During the intermission, the track got a visit from Santa Claus. Santa took a ride around the track on the back of the Cars Plus Clean Up Truck. After Santa’s ride, he sat on the front stretch and gave all the kids that came and visited the track a present.

The Pepsi Limited Late Models started the show back up with a three car invert putting Chris Phipps on the inside and Jason Crouse on the outside.  Jason Crouse jumped to the early lead and Josh Wright, winner of four straight, followed him off the start. Lap 3 had the first caution of the night for two cars getting tangled up.  Both cars were able to stay on the lead lap and on lap 6, the second caution came out in which David Currier Jr. saw his night come to an end. Scott Franklin had a really strong car after winning the pole and inverting back in the field found himself battling for second place from the second caution until lap 20 when he got ahead of Wright and started making his charge towards Crouse.  Finishing order was Crouse, Franklin, Wright, Bill Cassavaugh, and Mike Eplee.

The Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks showed only five cars but after the green flag, Micky Canipe jumped to the early lead with Dave Hasson, and Jimmy Whisnant battling right behind him.  Carroll McKinney and Scott Bumgarner battled hard about a straightaway length behind the leaders.  On the last lap of the 20 lap race, Whisnant made his move and got around Hasson for second and Hasson came straight up turn 1 into Whisnant causing the finish to be a cautioned checkers. Canipe, Bumgarner, McKinney, Whisnant and Hasson was the finishing order.

Next week will be having Fairvalue night at the races. We will have the Whelen Late Models, Pepsi Limited Late Models, Baton Tire Street Stocks, Red Baron Race Parts Hobby Stocks, Ministocks, Minicup and Walt Arney Superette and Deli Road Rage. Gates open at 6pm, Qualifying at 7pm and Features beginning at 8pm.
