Release- Race Report 4-18-08

Hudson, North Carolina (April 18, 2008) - Round two
of the Nascar Whelen All American Series on USG Sheetrock
night at the races at Tri-County Motor Speedway was nothing
but exciting from the drop of the Green Flag living up to the
slogan where “Action is the Attraction”. With twenty of
the finest late models in the southeast taking the green flag,
Travis Swaim ran a blistering qualifying lap of 16.197 to take
the pole but after the dice roll he would start sixth. So the
top spot for the race would be given to Jarit Johnson brother
of back to back Sprint Cup Champion Jimmy Johnson.
The race was filled with side by side racing several times
when the leaders went three wide. 16 year old driving
sensation Matt DiBenedetto showed up right before the drivers
meeting with his race team whom immediately bolted on four new
Goodyear Racing Tires and took to the track for qualifying.
DiBenedetto started outside pole and immediately jumped out to
a 10 car length lead over Sam Watts and Kevin Leicht. Andy
Loden was forced to the unfamiliar low side for the first 15
laps before making a charge to the front using his familiar
high line. Meanwhile Dibenedetto, Watts and Liecht raced door
to door several times while battling for the lead. Watts faded
at the end with that leaving DiBenedetto, Liecht and Loden to
settle who would take the win.
A late race caution set up a Green, White, Checker finish
that was something to behold. Last lap coming through turns
three and four Leicht gets a run on the inside and Loden gets
a run on the outside of DiBenedetto and the finish line it's
DiBenedetto taking the win, Loden in second and Liecht is left
spinning across the line for third. This is DiBenedetto's
first ever late model victory at TCMS. He had this to say in
victory lane. Its great to win here without any practice and I
would also like to thank Loden and Liecht for driving me
clean.
In the
Limited Late Models, Jason Crouse started on the pole and lead
the full distance to take the win and dominate. Last weeks
winner Dexter Canipe Jr. started seventh and fought his way up
to second running out of time to catch Crouse. Bill Cassavaugh
finished third, with Nathan Dellinger and Chris Phipps
rounding out the top five.
Pepsi Super
Stock Division had Scott Franklin out front to take the win
with Kevin Townsend fighting him for the win early on in the
race but couldn't wrestle the top spot away. Townsend had not
practiced or qualified his car due to a wedding. Jason
Franklin rounded out the top three making it a family affair
upfront.
A large
field of Baton Tire Street Stocks saw Kevin By take the win by
one car length over David Smith with Johnathon Smith finishing
third.
Red Baron Race parts Hobby
Stocks had Chad Miller taking the victory holding off a late
race charge by the “Superman” car of Chad Harrington.
Stephen Clipboard rounded out the top three.
